As I pulled up in my trusty Hyundai Accent gleaming under the soft, overcast sky, I couldn't help but feel a wave of calm wash over me. There I was, standing casually against the car in my blue shirt, jeans, and white cap, right in front of the charming AC Cottages at Makula Kocha rest house in the heart of Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary. The photo captures that perfect moment of arrival—the sleek gray sedan parked on the brick-paved driveway, surrounded by lush green lawns, neatly trimmed bushes, and swaying tropical palms. Behind me, the cottages stood invitingly with their pale green walls and vibrant red-tiled roofs, marked simply as "1" and "2," their open verandas promising quiet spots to unwind. In the distance, the dense, forested hills rose like a natural fortress, untouched and alive with the subtle sounds of wildlife, all under a gentle cloudy canopy that muffled the world into serenity.
Staying here was like stepping into a hidden paradise, a true escape from the relentless hustle of city life. I booked one of the AC cottages for 3000 rupees per day, plus taxes and a maintenance charge, which felt like a steal for the profound peace it offered. The facilities were basic—no fancy city hotel luxuries—but that was part of the charm: a comfortable bed, air conditioning to beat the humidity, and just enough amenities to let nature take center stage. I made sure to inform the canteen staff in advance about meals, as food was available with additional charges; nothing extravagant, but hearty options like fresh local fish, simple vegetarian dishes, or even chai with pakoras that hit the spot after a day of exploration.
The real thrill came when I decided to venture from Makula Kocha to the Dalma Hill Top—a roughly 14 km drive that turned into quite the adventure, especially in the rainy season. Buckling into my Accent, I set off on what started as patches of concreted and paved road but quickly devolved into partly washed-off kutcha tracks, slick with mud and riddled with potholes from the relentless downpours. The dense forest closed in around me, a canopy of dripping leaves and vines that amplified every rumble of the engine. Maneuvering the steep ascents and hairpin bends was no small feat—sudden climbs that had me gripping the wheel, carefully navigating the slippery inclines where the road narrowed to barely fit one vehicle, all while the rain turned the path into a muddy gauntlet. Visibility dipped as mist rolled in near the higher elevations, and I had to ease through the fog, heart pounding with excitement as the car climbed toward the 3000-feet summit.
It took about an hour of focused driving, dodging washed-out sections and embracing the raw off-road challenge, but reaching the top felt triumphant—the panoramic views over the sanctuary's rolling hills and distant Jamshedpur emerging through breaks in the clouds, rewarding every twist and turn.
